5th Gen 4Runner Overland Build

Fully Kitted: 5th Gen 4Runner

A customer recently came in with 5th Gen 4Runner, looking for an in-depth build so he can try his hand at overlanding. He’s been exploring all his life, and now he has the opportunity to do it while being self-sustained within his vehicle!

Starting in the front, our customer went for the ARB Summit Front Bumper for protection. This bumper features a unique access door for a winch and control box to be properly housed. We installed the Warn Zeon 10 Platinum winch to maximize the space within the bumper and provide ample rescue strength (10,000 lbs pull capacity.) We followed up with the Bubba Rope Synthetic 3/8” x 100’ winch line, which is stronger than traditional steel lines while being a safer and lighter alternative.

Suppressed within the Summit Bumper, we installed the Baja Designs Squadron Sport Amber WC Fog Lights, which are a great fit and enhance visibility in hard-to-see situations. Mounted between the brush guards, we also installed a set of Baja Designs LP9 Pro Driving/Combo Lights. These lights throw a wide angle of light, near 200 degrees for insane clarity while driving.

For suspension, our customer wanted to go with Old Man Emu’s BP-51 Suspension Kit Heavy. He of course added the BF Goodrich All-Terrrain KO2’s for maximum off-road traction. We also installed the White Knuckle Sliders powder coated with the rear-top-plate, compatible with KDSS. These sliders have been tested and true, and are definitely a favorite of ours. For underside protection, our customer wanted the RCI Front Skid Plate and Transmission Skid Plate.

For his rack, we built out the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform with Backbone for extreme support and versatility. We mounted and wired Rigid Scene lights to the rack, so Brian can light up his campsite when he needs to. For the tent, we of course set him up with the James Baroud Evasion XXL – arguably the nicest RTT on the market today. This tent has an ionized woven fabric to ensure waterproofness in all 4 seasons. We also installed the James Baroud Tunnel Awning, so now our customer can climb into his tent without being exposed to inclement weather.

Under the hood, we replaced the main battery with an Odessey Extreme, and added a ReLion Deep Cycle battery for his auxiliary with a MOLE Overland custom fabricated Auxiliary Battery Tray.  We mounted the REDARC BCDC1240D with the MPPT Solar Controller to keep the batteries topped off in charge and allow easy storage of solar energy.

We wired up the SPOD system and mounted the switches at the base of the center console within the cab. He can now control all of his additional lights from one central location! We also brought additional power to his trunk, with additional Blue Sea USB ports, an ARB Secure Fridge Port, and a Victron Monitor to check up on the battery. We integrated two ARB RD945 drawers in the rear to organize his gear.
