Baker Lake camping

Guest post by: DYLAN FURST

Being just under an hour off the I-5 freeway, Baker Lake is a great destination for winter camping. With a well maintained forest road running along the lake, the free camping site options are endless.

This was the first real adventure with my new gear from Adventure Ready. The first weekend the tent was installed, I took it out into the woods behind my house for a trial run. Sleeping on the roof of my car was unlike any camping experience I’ve ever had, it was much easier to set up than a regular tent, not to mention it was a lot more comfortable. I figured Baker Lake would be a perfect spot to put the gear to the test.

I arrived at Baker Lake in the pouring rain. I used the Rhino Rack awning on the drivers side of my Jeep Patriot for the first time, It set up very quickly and got me out of the rain within seconds. With the lake being very close to Mount Baker, the temperature was very cool so the fridge could be set on very low power. So far I have had no issues with my car battery when powering this fridge overnight, it’s surprisingly efficient. I awoke to a grey morning, set up the stove on a tree stump, and had a perfect breakfast and some coffee while overlooking the lake.

Baker Lake is a hidden gem in Northwest Washington and is at the top of my list for a weekend camping getaway. It has very easy vehicle access and you are also almost guaranteed to have the lake all to yourself during the winter months.
